Responsibilities Include
- Plan and implement work procedures requiring judgment involving the independent review, selection, adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures and criteria (i.e. Tx THA oil sampling and analysis based on Doble DTA Analysis, Clearance and Work methods review based IEEE Substation Design Standards & Guidelines, etc.)
- Work closely with all groups associated with Planning, Budgeting and Installation of Distribution Substations and the Design, Construction and Operation of Distribution and Transmission Substations
- Assist with Managing the planning and spending for the annual Distribution Substation maintenance programs, to include the Substation Transformer Asset Replacement Program, breakers & regulators.
- Research industry reports/studies to determine improvements in testing procedures and test analysis methods to help extend the life of the substation equipment. Incorporate these improvements into practice by updating existing operation and maintenance standards.
- Work on special projects to investigate equipment manufacturer design improvements and determine the best method to apply these changes to existing equipment. Study grounding, lightning, switching transient problems relating to substation equipment failures/problems. Investigate new equipment technology to adapt improvements/new equipment into the substation design standards
- Work with Substation Project Managers to review Substation Estimate packages for approval. This will also involve attending on-site meetings to provide input into the Conceptual design packages being estimated for spending approval and for review of the Substation Design Drawing Packages for construction overview & Outage planning.
- Manage the Distribution Substation Transformer Emergency Spare Inventory. Review Health and condition of the spare Tx inventory to confirm they are ready for service. Also review each Tx category to confirm adequate coverage for each in-service Tx.
- Review Mobile Tx installation requests and manage the Mobile Tx installation Scheduling/Reservation system. Attend On-site meetings to assist with planning and review of Mobile Tx installation plans for Capital and Maintenance projects.
- Engineer III - Will serve as a Subject Matter Expert on engineering and operations related substations issues for internal as well as external inquiries. Substation related items such as sound complaints, property line/property maintenance issues, oil containment, substation screening and site drainage are examples of items to be routinely addressed.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience
The knowledge, skills, abilities and experience required for entry into this job include the following:
- Engineer I - 0-2+ years of relevant engineering experience;
- Engineer II - 3+ years of relevant engineering experience;
- Engineer III - 5+ years of relevant engineering experience;
- Full knowledge of engineering theories and principles;
- Strong oral and written communication skills (includes technical writing);
- Ability to think analytically and solve complex problems;
- In depth knowledge with a variety of computer applications, along with the ability to manipulate personal computer applications and perform engineering calculations using applicable software programs (e.g. Matlab, Excel, etc.);
- Ability to interpret applicable codes, regulations and practices (i.e. IEEE Std, NESC, NEC. NFPA, etc.);
- Demonstrated ability to work independently or as part of a team to analyze processes, troubleshoot problems and develop innovative solutions that can be implemented to save time and/or money;
- Demonstrated ability to process information quickly, apply effective decision-making skills and effectively manage multiple planning and decision-making tasks;
- Strong planning, organizational and project management skills.
