Job Description

The VMware Solution Engineer plays a key role in building and sustaining customer relationships across a variety of industries. They help craft solutions that dazzle and amaze our customers while solving their most difficult and pressing technology issues. SEs are also fundamental players in driving the adoption of our solutions through consultative and architecture focused engagement. The SE works as a member of the core sales team to build long-term business outcomes for customers while also helping to grow the territory by working collaboratively with our channel partners and OEMs. The SE is a high-impact, highly visible role responsible for ensuring pervasive adoption of VMware software and solutions and closing technical wins within accounts in the region.

Success in the Role: What are the performance goals for the first 90 days?

  • During the first 90 days you will work to gain a foundational knowledge of VMware’s platform as well as our history.
  • You will have the opportunity to begin taking an active role in the sales process from day 1.
  • By the end of the first 60 days, you will be averaging 10+ customer engagements per week
  • By the end of your first quarter, you will be prepared to own all the responsibilities of the day-to-day SE role.

What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?

The Commercial SE serves as the ultimate authority for technical validation of opportunities in their territory. You will work closely with the commercial account managers and our channel partners to craft and validate solutions aimed at solving our customers' most challenging issue. Another key aspect of the role is continuous education on our strategies and solutions. You will be asked to complete a regular training curriculum to keep your skills sharp and knowledge up to date.

Required and Recommended skills are:

  • An ability to intake and distill substantial amounts of knowledge into a deliverable message.
  • The pace of this role is very fast, thus strong time management is needed.
  • Strong communication skills are essential.
  • A desire for continuous learning and evolution is necessary for anyone wanting to become an SE.
  • Curiosity in technology and a strong love for problem solving
  • Some understanding of Data Center technologies, multi cloud strategies, cyber security, and/or DevOps strongly desired
  • We are a partner lead business, so some knowledge of channel and partner sales organizations is recommended.

The hiring manager for this role is a veteran in the commercial space, having worked both as an SE and SE leader for this team. He has been with VMware for 6+ years as both an individual contributor. He believes that being a manager is a title and a set of responsibilities while being a leader is a lifestyle that transcends time in role or title and is responsible for improving the lives and careers of those around him. The team is diverse in makeup and experience and fosters an environment where each team member can learn to become an expert in the role. Our individual goals are different, but we all have the same goal to build a strong team capable of serving our business .

Where is the role located?

The C2 team is based in Austin, Texas. We support an inside selling organization and will be in the office as many as 4 days per week depending on tenure.
